Thank you Tarini Bengani for sharing your project as part of the Young Sustainability Champion Badge programme. Good Summary on SIngapore's initiatives towards the Sustainable Development goals.
  1. Zero Hunger - SDG 2 aims to achieve no hunger, food security and nutritious food for all. It also hopes to promote sustainable agriculture practices. Singapore is working towards this goal by diversifying food import sources, implementing high tech technology (e.g. sensors) at local farms and growing fruits and vegetables in vertical farms. Reducing food waste is paramount to accomplishing this goal, and as a result Singapore has launched programmes like “Love Your Food – Waste Less. Save More.” to educate the public about good food purchase and preparation practices. In addition to this, supermarkets in Singapore donate unsold food to food banks and charities.
  2. Affordable and Clean Energy - SDG 7 aims to achieve inexpensive, reliable and sustainable energy for all. Singapore is already doing well in terms of accessibility to energy with 100% of the population having access to electricity and clean fuels for cooking. However, ensuring power generation is environmentally friendly is hard for the nation due to its limited resources. The country relies on natural gas from Malaysia and Indonesia to produce electricity and introducing tidal, hydro and geothermal renewable energy sources is not feasible. Still, Singapore has introduced many solar energy initiatives such as the floating solar beds at Tengeh Reservoir that show promise.
  3. Sustainable Cities and Communities - SDG 11 aims to achieve inclusive, secure and sustainable cities. The Little Red Dot has limited space and therefore the government is executing numerous innovative policies and plans to get around this. They are revitalizing areas to become more sustainable and multi-functional. An example of this is the Jurong Lake District which is being developed to include hotels, offices, retail stores as well as gardens that the whole family can enjoy together. Punggol Northshore is another eco-smart town where the government is trying to introduce green practices to reduce the nation’s carbon footprint.
