As part of the Young Geologist Badge Programme, Shavonne shares why earthquakes are more prominent in Indonesia than in Singapore
Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it is on the Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. The area shaped like a shoe spans 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) and is where a majority of the world's earthquakes occur. Plate tectonics and the Ring of Fire are the main reasons why Indonesia has so many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The earth below them is constantly changing and constantly moving.
Singapore, on the other hand, is not located on a plate boundary and is therefore not prone to earthquakes.
