Our problem statement is ‘How might we automatise a plastic waste sorting bin which can sort recyclable plastic from non-plastic and plastic trash for households and schools, such that plastic recycling can be more convenient and effective, increasing recycling rates. In response, we have created a plastic waste sorting bin which can automatically sort an object placed on it into plastic or non-plastic (including plastic trash). After detecting its material, the lid of the bin will be tilted to an angle such that the lid is open and the object can fall into the correctly-labelled container. We used Arduino (to code the control of the lid of the bin) and Tensorflow (to detect between plastic and non-plastic objects).
